Altmore KOH 5 mile TT
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the record set by Martyn Graham in the Altmore KOH 5 mile time trial. In 2007 Martyn completed the course in a remarkable 14 minutes and 45 seconds, an incredible 47 seconds faster than his closest rival that day. This record was subsequently beaten 4 years later by 5 seconds by Peter Hughes in 2011 after 4 years of many good men trying their utmost.
In the present era 6 years is a very long time for a record to stand.
Is the time right for a new record to be set?
Can the 2017 KOH champion go below 14:40?
The answer to both questions has to be “yes”.
In 2007 & 2011 the competing cyclists were gifted perfect conditions with perhaps even a little tail wind, which most certainly helped. However, on the other side of the coin, in 2007 there were very few Island Wheelers with race or TT experience; there were no carbon fibre bikes or £1500 wheels; no electronic gears or space helmets; no tri-bars or bodysuits; no special diets or race training programs and certainly no personal trainers.
The weather conditions for 2017 are not within our control; but if the weather is in anyway favourable then the balance most certainly tips in favor of the 2017 competitor. 10 years on with the improved equipment, the better training and the great talent now available in the Island Wheelers, we have every chance of seeing a new record set.
Is 14:30 possible ?
Yes, if you can average 21mph over the tough 5 miles!!
Are you that cyclist?
Regardless of conditions, equipment or training, there is one certainty that remains the same for 2017 as it did in 2007 and 2011. That is, that the KOH champion 2017 will have to embrace more pain, taste more blood and spill more sweat than any other competitor.
To all the 2017 KOH competitors, whether you are chasing the record, the title or a personal best – Good Luck.
This year’s Altmore KOH 5 mile TT will take place this Wednesday 13th September from Torrent Complex, Donaghamore. There will be a aero and non-aero section for both youth and adult. Sign on will open at 6.00pm and this year there will be no charge. Club members only.
We hope to see as many members come along to either ride or support those who are hoping to better previous times or break the time record and become KOH for 2017.
