Wheelers To Host CX Race at Windmill Wood

On Sunday 6th January 2013, the Island Wheelers Cycling Club will host a pre-nationals Cyclo-Cross race in Windmill Wood, Dungannon.  The event will incorporate both a Cyclo-Cross ‘A’, and ‘B’ race, as well as a youth, and mountain bike support race.

Pre-registrations for the all the races are now open, and riders can sign up through the Uslter Cyclo Cross site here. The pre-registrations will close on Friday 4th January 2013 at 20.00. Race day sign will open at 09.30, with the full program of events as follows

Under 6s – 10:30
Under 8s – 10:40
Under 10s – 10:50
Under 12s – 11:05
Under 16s – 11:30
MTB Support male & female – 11:31
Under 14s – 11:32
Cyclo-cross race – 13:00

The main course will begin with a fire road start uphill for around 200 metres before heading into a wide trail.  The course continues through the trail, out onto a fire road, and back into the trail for around 1.5 miles.  There is a green area which will hold the youth course, and will be incorporated into the senior course as well.  This wood would have been used for MTB races around 10 years ago.

This race would be an ideal preparation for the cyclo-cross races with the National Championship happening on the following Sunday.  For all, it will be a great way to start the new year after the Christmas indulgence.  For the youth riders, this will be the first race of a new season where they will all have moved up an age bracket, some will move up age category while others will be racing for their second year in a particular age category.  This is the first time the Island Wheelers have held a CX event but it is hoped that Windmill Wood will be included in the Ulster Cyclo-Cross series which is due to start in October 2013.

After the final race, the prizes will be awarded, as well as food and refreshments.
