Summer Trip to Newcastle.

12 Wheelers enjoyed a weekend to remember on the Summer Trip to Newcastle taking in the famous Spelga Dam climb which was conquered by all even first timer Edel Nugent who dug very deep to get to the top of this very steep climb. The weather was fantastic and everything went according to plan the whole weekend.
Breakfast was at the 5 ways Filling Station in Newry and to be truthful the fry there was no match for the Wheelers whatsoever, from there it was onwards and upwards gradually climbing to Hilltown and on to Spelga where once over the top the Wheelers tested the nerves on the decent hitting over 50mph nearly all the way to Killkeel.
The first pint stop was in Annalong and a good pint it was to, so good we had trouble shifting a couple of wheelers but on we rode to Newcastle for the second pint stop at the gate Lodge at Donard Hotel to relax in the glorious sunshine lapping up the expensive pints, so good a few stayed to nearly dinner time before checking into the Hotel for the night.
Dinner was prompt at 7:00pm and the efforts of the day were laid bare as some of the Wheelers tucked into feeds that on any other day would have fed a small to medium sized family. After dinner there was the surprise of a beautiful Birthday/ Celebration cake for Edel and Sheena who were both celebrating Birthdays, the usual Happy Birthday song nearly lifted the roof of the Hotel much to the amusement of all other patrons.
From there it was down the town for some music and craic highlighted by Shane Colemans rendition of Don’t Worry by Bob Marley in the Donard Bar, then on to Quinns for a blues band and disco where all the calories from the dinner were spent on the dance floor to the early hours.
Breakfast came early and the talk was light in the morning. Most were talking of Antrim in the football, so it was the shortest way home to catch them on the box in the evening.
This was without a shadow of a doubt the best Summer Trip so far anyone will tell you so next year has a lot to live up to, although the weather makes it.
