Our off-road crew made the short trip down the road to the fifth and final round of the Ulster Cross-country Mountain Bike series which took place at Craigavon Lakes on Sunday, hosted by Apollo Cycling Team.
Racing got underway at 10:30 with the:
Under 6s, Rhys claimed top spot on the podium with a great ride closely followed by Odhran and Eben.
The Under 8s were up next, Calum just missed out on a podium finish coming home 4th while Aliyah had a bit of bad luck at the start of her race crashing out.
Scott won the Ulster U10 league title with his 1st place in the U10s, Shane, Adam and Oisin were 4th, 5th and 6th respectively which is a great achievement considering all 3 are U10 next year! Sarah just missed a podium spot coming home 4th.
The Under 12s course had been changed from last year, taking in a bit more of the park. Darren needed to win to lift the U12 League title, again he was pushed hard by his closest rivals, Ben and Dean but just managed to claim the win and the league title.
James had a mechanical in the U16 race, while Matthew, in his first off-road race performed very well.
The senior’s course was fast, with added technical features plus a bridge crossing and even more grass! The S4’s all rode well, Kieran 5th, Gordon 11th Gerard 13th and Sean 20th I’m not sure of the overall league standings but I think we may have 1 or 2 in the top 3. Janice took the win in the women’s S3 category.
In the S3 race both Sean and Thomas knew they needed to finish in the top two places to claim the s3 league title. They both worked hard together taking turns at the front to break away from the rest of the field to setup a sprint finish. It was Thomas who took the win by the narrowest of margins with Sean in 2nd, meaning Sean took 1st place in the Ulster League while Thomas is joint 2nd, it my calculations are correct, congratulations men! Cathal rode well as usual finishing 15th, Barry who was taking part in his first mtb event this year, had a nasty fall while he was sitting in 10th position, hope your back on the bike soon.
That’s the cross country finished for the season, but Youth and senior racing continues in October with the cyclo-cross season. The first round will be hosted by Apollo CT at Lurgan Park on Sunday 5 October 2014 and Island Wheeler hosting round 3 on the 19th October in Windmill Park. See www.ulstercyclocross.com for details.
