Date: Sunday 5 October 2014
Event: Ulster Cyclo-cross Round 1
Location: Lurgan Park
Host club: Apollo CT
Picking up where they left off; the Island Wheelers Juniors dominated round 1 of the Ulster Cyclocross Series at Lurgan Park. The 2014 series has been backed by Chain Reactions Belfast Store who provided an event package at the race which included joint branded podium backdrop and banners, cow bells, sweets, vouchers and a raffle prize. The first raffle prize of a new helmet was won by Barry Kellett. Also available were 3 demo Vitus cyclo-cross bikes which were trialled today by some of the riders.
As was the case last year, Island Wheelers have a vibrant Youth Scene with continued focus on off-road events. I have been witness to one of Gary Rafferty’s training evenings and after seeing what the kids go through it was no surprise to hear the results that were achieved on Sunday at Lurgan Park.
The Days Racing was started by Craigavon Mayor Colin McCusker and seen a field of 20 riders take on 2 laps of the u6 circuit. This race was won by Rhys Hepburn who it seems had started a trend. Next up was the Under 8 race in which Callum Hepbrn took a fantastic 2nd place for the boys with Aliyah Rafferty taking an excellent win for the girls.
The U10 race was to see the riders take on 4 laps of a slightly more challenging circuit with IW coming home with the top two spots on the podium in the boys race as Adam Rafferty finished clear of teammate Oisin Ferrity. The girls race was dominated by VC Glendale who took a clean sweep and continue to impress in these races.
The U12 race was dominated by one rider, Darren Rafferty who took a fantastic solo win in a display so dominant that seen him push the lead rider who marshals the youth races so hard that he had to abandon the race and allow Darren to lead the race home on his own. Scott Roberts followed Darren home to take an excellent 3rd place on this technical course.
The 11:45 race seen 4 races go off in one and with such a large field of riders on the course at once it was always going to be a frenetic race in which Shea Kelly took a brilliant 3rd place in the U16 Boys MTB.
In the Ladies MTB Race we had a fantastic third place with Janice Hepburn coming in just after Kathryn Aiken and Trudy Brown.
I think we can safely say this is going to be a great season for Island Wheelers and with the club hosting Round 3 at Windmill Wood on 19th October, we will all get to witness this exciting racing first hand. We could also be doing with all the help we can get when running such an event so please get in touch if you are available on the day.
The club would also like to thank all those involved, especially Apollo CT, Craigavon Council, Chain Reaction Cycles and of course Martin Grimley for the excellent work they did in hosting such a great event.
