Official launch of Tour the lough cycle Sunday 29th May.
Thanks to Councillor Linda Dillon and Coalisland Racing legend Séamus Devlin who launched the opening of 2016 “Tour The Lough Cycle” and it is a great honour for Naomh Colum Cille to have Séamus with us. He raced in the Irelands “Tour de France”- An Rás Tailteann – in the mid-1950s. The Rás was an 8-day relentless, no compromise, endurance event of over 1000 miles. Participants became known as ‘ the savage road men’.In the 1958 Rás, Seamus and …3 other local men, Joe McIvor, Paddy Campbell and Tommy Drumm represented Tyrone amongst these ‘savage road men’. On the 4th stage, from Clonakilty to Tralee, Seamus broke away from the pack on the climb over Moll’s Gap and led the whole way into Tralee. This stage was 115 miles and Seamus’s average speed was 24 mph. He finished 3rd overall and but for a broken chain, could well have won the Rás.
