On Wednesday 16th March our Honorary President, friend and inspiration Hugo Loughran passed away after battling cancer for a number of months.
In the early 1990s when the first seeds of the Island Wheelers were just starting to take root, Hugo was there, taking part, encouraging and setting an example. When in 2003 the club set up officially, one of the first things the committee did was to unanimously vote Hugo as ‘Honorary President’ for life. Why? Because Hugo had been our ‘Inspiration’.
Hugo took his role as president seriously. He turned up for practically all events and no role was too small or too big for him; whether it was marshalling at a race or presenting prizes at a function. But the role that Hugo enjoyed most was simply riding his bicycle; and it was in this role that Hugo was his greatest inspiration to men and women 20, 30 and 40 years younger.
Hugo may be gone, but his spirit will live on with many of the Island Wheelers for a long, long time.
UPDATE:
There will be a guard of honor at Dungannon Chapel on Friday 18th March for funeral mass at 10 am and any member who can attend should be there 15 mins before hand with club colours on if possible. Thank you.
