Spring has officially arrived and how do we know that? No, it’s not the daffodils on the roadside or the clocks changing this weekend. We can tell because it’s the scattering of shiny carbon bikes coming out of winter hibernation each weekend and also the obvious average speed increases from the pack, showing the fitness levels that have been worked on over the winter nights.
On Sunday 20th March, a good sized group left the Cornmill on a very warm March morning, Garmin computers beeping throughout the pack showing the balmy temperature of 16 degrees. It was a pretty flat 54 mile down to Portadown to Gilford and back around via Lurgan. 18.2mph average was the statistic coming back into town and some members certainly were feeling the pace in the last few miles. But throughout it has to be said that the levels of cycling fitness are excellent currently and a good summer is on the outlook for the club if this is maintained.
The majority of the bunch were reporting of their midweek cycling exploits over St. Patricks day with a few riders tackling 150mile endurance rides, others doing strength work in the Sperrin mountains and others just doing maintenance miles. Already talk is of summer trips away to the likes of the Wicklow 200 and of doing charity events, so there is a lot going on currently in the club. Stay tuned to the website and the notes for forthcoming events.
