The Tyrone County Championship took place on Sunday 22nd Sept, from Milestone Centre Carrickmore. It was a very tough, rolling course of two, 23mile laps that took in Carrickmore-Omagh-Beragh-Sixmilecross and a 14% hill climb to the finish line in Carrickmore.
Representing the wheelers in the A4 race were Owen Campbell and Nigel Flanagan. Conditions for the 46 mile race were good with temperatures hitting 20 degrees and only a slight breeze.
The racing was fast and furious from the off with the average speed for the first lap 25mph. A few breaks were tried in the first few miles but none stuck until 12th mile an eight man break finial got away, which soon whittled down to a four man break which included Owen, this was going to be a battle for the podium position but the hill got the better of Owen & he finished a superb 4th
Then it was Nigel’s turn to shine, who was in the group that had formed behind & on the hill climb managed to power away from the others to the finish line to claim a fantastic top eight position
A big thanks must go to Caldwell, Omagh and Termon cycling clubs for a well-organized professional event with the first class food and hospitality after the race
