MTB Round 3 Lady Dixon

Last weekend was a busy one for the Island wheelers club with the Limavaday Triathlon, Strabane 100 and Wicklow training over the Glenshane etc. On Sunday it was the Island wheeler’s ‘mud men, women and children’ who made the trip down the M1 to Lady Dixon Park in Belfast for the third round of the 2014 Irish National Point Series (NPS) which also doubled up as Round 3 of the Ulster Cross-country mountain bike series. This venue has been known for fast racing on dry dusty trails with plenty of grass and sun, but not on Sunday as the skies were overcast and as the rain came down, the trails were more like a Tuesday evening in Drumcairne.

Great teamwork was really evident (it was like a F1 pit lane at one stage) as there was a scramble to change tyreswheels between races as the weather played havoc with the trails

The wheeler’s were well represented across all categories male and female from u6 to senior 3, again thanks to all who put time and effort into making this happen. Sean Scullion continued his great run of form by claiming 1st position in the s3 race, well done Sean, you know what they say” behind every good man there’s a good woman”. Hot on Seans heels was club mate Thomas Hepburn who also rode a fantastic race, coming from the back of the pack to finish 2nd. Both Raymond Rocks and Cathal McGuigan finished strongly in 9th and 23rd respectfully.

Our only adult female racer on the day Janice bagged the bragging rights in the Hepburn household with a fantastic 1st in the ladies senior 3.

In the s4 we had some great results, with Gordon Roberts 2nd, Kieran Gilligan 3rd and Gerard Ferrity 4th, who was showing no ill effects from his recent trip to Paris! The birthday boy Sean Bleeks was in next 15th followed by Gary Rafferty in 18th.(just finishing ahead of his target man Gareth Skelly from Carn wheelers)

Congratulations to Erin Bain, who was first lady in her age group. Well done Erin!

Thankfully the IW kids got their races over before the rain. Again they all performed very well.
Here’s a quick rundown on how they all got on:
U6- Rhys 5th Odhran 9th out of a field of 21!

U10- Scott 2nd Adam 6th Shane 7th Oisin 8th and Sarah 4th in the girls
